History

The site of World Cup Park was, once upon a time, an island in Hangang filled with orchids , called ‘Nanjido’. The island was an ecological treasure with numerous wild flowers and migratory birds. However, in 1987 the Seoul City turned the island into a landfill site, and for 15 years it became the largest garbage mount in the world holding about 140 million tons of garbage rising 98 meters above the sea level. It was even called as an island with three abundant things: files, dusts and stench. It became barren wasteland filled with methane gas and landfill leachate. Landfill operations were terminated in 1993 and the site was stabilized since 1996, and renovation projects were started to improve residential environment in surrounding Sangam-dong. In November 2000, a park was begun to construct, which was terminated in May 2002. Also in 2002, it was decided to build Seoul World Cup Stadium on the site.
