History

Dongdaemun History Museum

The Dongdaemun History Museum was established within the Dongdaemun History & Culture Park to preserve and show artifacts found from excavation work conducted during the park’s construction. A total of 2778 pieces comprising 2575 artifacts were discovered from the site with occupation level ranging from the early Joseon Dynasty to modern times.

The Dongdaemun History Museum introduces the excavation’s vertical stratum by period and displays the artifacts discovered from each site. In addition to video segments explaining the excavation project and result, the museum features a hands-on excavation experience corner and information search corner. It incorporates a wide variety of content formats to provide an engaging experience. Restorations of the Seoul city fortress, Yigansumun and Chiseong are located near the Dongdaemun History Museum to help visitors better experience the traces of history.

Dongdaemun Stadium Memorial

The Dongdaemun Stadium Memorial was planned as a space for everyone who remembers Dongdaemun Stadium, and to provide the chance to relive the fading memories of the Stadium and the surrounding area. Built in 1925 by the Japanese colonial government, the Stadium was first named Gyeongseong Stadium, later renamed Seoul Stadium, and then finally renamed Dongdaemun Stadium. Until it was demolished in 2007, it was the scene of Korea’s major sports events for 83 years.

In the Dongdaemun Stadium Memorial, a diorama containing the major sports competitions and events held in the stadium, as well as life around the stadium, helps recall memories related with the no longer existing sports landmark.

Dream, Design, Play = DDP

The DDP construction project was launched with the goal of turning the former Dongdaemun Stadium site into a park, vitalizing cultural and commercial activities with the development of the underground space, and establishing a cultural complex with design industry support facilities.

Various records show that discussions on reshaping the old and worn-out Dongdaemun Stadium and related facilities can be traced back to 1995. At that time, the Dongdaemun area was gaining popularity as a mecca of modern fashion, concentrated with high-rise wholesale clothing malls, such as Doosan Fashion Town (33 stories), Nuzzon (16 stories), and Dongdaemun Fashion (14 stories), that had been springing up since the success of the Art Plaza, which opened near the Dongdaemun Stadium in 1995.

According to media reports from May 1995, at that time, Seoul City was considering the Dongdaemun Stadium site, among others, as the new location for the City Hall building.

In 2005, Seoul City drew up the basic plan for the development of the Dongdaemun Stadium location, preparing the foundation for the full-scale launch of the development project in 2006.
